The New World Grid

We have installed a new chat system based on http://www.mibbit.com/ and using IRC. We used http://www.phpfreechat.net/ but it became laggy since some days, and private messages were awfully long to come… We choosen mibbit because we wanted :

• a reliable chat
• a chat without need of plugins (no flash, no java)
• to focus on accessibility and respect the standards of the web
• a useful PasteBin feature included : no more need to visit the external website. Just click, paste and submit and the pastebin link is in the chat !

I am happy to announce you the last version of OpenSim Made Easy. It is still in beta phase but it works pretty fine.

What is OpenSim Made Easy ?

OSME (OpenSim Made Easy) is a custom OpenSim installation including a software we are developing to make your OpenSim experience easier and better.

It creates / removes regions in one click, starts or shuts down your regions in one click, configures your network automatically using UPnP technology and it is also possible to show your ports and private IP address if UPnP fails.

Many features are being developped currently such as :

• A Public/Private mode so you can build quietly or open your region to external residents.
• An offline chat allowing you to chat with visitors while you are offline.
• Automatic updates when pressing the “Check Updates” button.
• A backup tool to keep your region contents safe.
• An advanced interface to make OpenSim more friendly (thanks to Dr Scofield for his RemoteAdmin plugin !)

How we work

We think that the best way to work isn’t the old french hierarchical scheme. I say french because I am, and because I live such a scheme at my real life work. It’s an inefficient way to work and federate people.

Rather, we give greater importance to empowerment, trust, openness and leadership.

Empowerment

I think that empowerment is the key to let people be creative and have fun to work. No need to give orders. People can take their own decisions. We only show the way, the global needs for the project. Then, it’s up to you to take the decision about what must be accomplished. Freedom is the New World Grid leit-motiv !

Trust and Openness

Unlike many organizations always controlling what their members do, we do trust and empower our fellows so they can achieve their goals with the less constraints possible. Transparency and Openness is an important principle to link us all and work together as a whole.

Hello !

I’m getting more time for meeting residents. As Calice and Crackou Newman are ill since some weeks, Lycie and I have a lot of work on the grid projects.

So, there is a new shiny part to our website : the Lab. This is not properly a laboratory but a collaborative place (wiki) where Newmans (grid administrators) and residents can put their contribution together. This is also the place where weput informations and ressources about our projects like OpenSim Made Easy, RemoteAdmin PHP Class and executable, and more to come !

Also, we organize Office Hours for residents and visitors to meet us ! As a beginning, Office Hours will be held all mondays from 10 PM to 11 PM (French Time / UTC+2) and thursdays at the same time window. Office Hours are listed and updated on the Lab.

Hello !

Since some weeks I was working on a software that will allow everybody to host their regions on the New World Grid for free and at home with a minimum manipulation : OpenSim Made Easy. Today I am about to release a first version.

This software is still beta, but I will improve it actively in the next weeks to add many new features and improvements. Then I plan to release it under the GPL licence and make it available for all OpenSim grids. OpenSimulator is a great Open Source software and deserves to be valuated and accessible. We think that everybody should have its own piece of virtual world at home. These are the principles and values of the New World Grid ! Openness and Accessibility.

Hello !

Since our opening, I didn’t take a lot of time for communication and I apologize. Real Life and grid projects are sometimes absorbing…

Anyway, I come today to explain what New World Grid is or is not, or pretends or does not pretend to be. I heard that a lot people were wondering… At the beginning of our New World adventure, we were three french Second Life friends (sorry if I miss the Trade Mark symbol, we do no commercial use of the Second Life trade mark). We had enough about abuses we couldn’t resolve ourselves without the need of paying a lawyer or about the land prices. So we all left SL to create our own peaceful virtual world.

What we are…

We are passionate people, with or without technical skills and we want to offer a peaceful place where everybody can come feel the Freedom to have its own virtual world. As all OpenSim grids, we need money to run the servers. That is why we started by proposing region hosting for an affordable monthly fee. We are open minded people, and even if we are french people, we absolutely don’t want to be tagged as a french grid. We are open to all cultures and all languages, this is why I choosen the english language as the default on our website. We laud openness and not sectarianism even if we were not open to external region hosting, what we will be offering soon… We want an accessible virtual world for everybody for cheap or even for free as far as we can maintain our servers.

What we are not…

We want an accessible virtual world, don’t we ? So [to respond to some people amazed that we had no IRC chat] it’s may be not that important to show our technical skills, or that we have an IRC channel… Our chat is not a geeky-IRC-chat-to-show-we-have-tech-skills but we wanted a chat easy to manage and with no need to install additional plugins as flash or java what can be annoying for people that don’t have them installed on their computer, or people in a Cybercafe with a limited computer… However, if someone is interrested in maintaining an IRC chat to help us, we would be happy to install an Ajax IRC chat

This is not important is we are not the best-grid-everybody-talk-about… We have no commercial goal, no competition goal. And we don’t aim to be a Second Life clone. We don’t propose a currency, nor plan to propose one. OpenSim is still alpha software and it would be an heresy to think just now about a currency… We leave this to Second Life with the related abuses and problems…

Now what ?

We want Freedom and Open Culture. It’s all we laud. In the next days, we will show you what we have for your fun ! We want to help the OpenSim Community, of course our way, but with all our love for this project and with all the ressources we will be able to bring together, without pretending to be what we are not…

Greetings, New World Residents! I am Imphazar Newman, the latest addition to the Newman Team. So, a bit about me;

I began my career in the metaverse on Second Life as ‘Axel Dwi’, before becoming Imphazar Gears. The Linden Labs policies began to irk me; prices were rocketing, nothing was free, not even the most simple of things, and things were becoming more Expensive every day. I began searching for a new grid, using the O.S Grid List.

It was a pure fluke that I found the New World Grid. I’d already seen the other grids, and not thought much of them. The NWG was the last grid I was going to try before giving up. On logging in, I found myself in Welcome, and began looking around. By chance, I met Olish Newman, who, though I did not know it then, was the owner and founder of NWG. We discussed LL, NWG, and ideas to further the grid. I decided to stay.

The next day, Olish allowed me to become the Administrator of Sandbox1, and for a long time, I poured ideas into it. I then went on to found a military - the Hyperius Tactical Korps. Olish and I then came up with an amazing new concept - A concept that is now Newman City, and, with the help of Darakon Kayvon, we began to build.

On the 21st of June, 2008, Olish offered me a Newman name. I proudly accepted, and here I am. Imphazar Newman. If you need any help, just drop me an IM, if that doesn’t work, I can often be found in any of the Newman City SIMs, or in Sandbox1, building. Thank you, for allowing me to become part of this team. It really is an honour, like being knighted.
